DJ Hughie
DJ Hughie..............the story so far!
DJ Hughie has had a natural love of music since he was a toddler. DJ Hughie is just a little bigger now, and he loves several types of music provided it has a great melody. DJ Hughie has been DJing since 1981 when a friend had an emergency at a party and had to leave to borrow a back-up amplifier after the one, he was using had stopped working. I was left to hold the fort using the underpowered household amplifier, a roll of insulation tape, a box of scratched vinyl 7" singles and 12" albums (thankfully my copy of '1000 Volts Of Holt' was in good condition), 2 very disturbed turntables, a temperamental mixer, an unsteady trestle table, and the wobbly floorboards in the rear room of a Victorian house in East London which caused the records to jump every time someone walked into the room, let alone when people were dancing. IT WAS A FANTASTIC PARTY!!!!!!!! This gave DJ Hughie a flavour for even more, and his music policy was, and still is to play the highest quality salsa & Latin music, but when he is called upon to do so, to play top quality soul (new and old), RnB, funk, rare groove, jazz-funk, two-step chillers, ska, rocksteady, jazz fusion, world music, reggae, zouk, lovers rock, bachata & more! Growing up in London town, DJ Hughie’s absolute favourite genre of music was 1970's soul. However, there was a dearth of any Black music to be heard on the radio unless it was Motown or Stax (and occasionally Trojan records). The only way to listen to the music that DJ Hughie loved was for him to hit the few clubs that were sprouting up around London and the Home Counties. The pirate radio stations of the 1980’s was playing the best quality Black music around at the time. This eventually led to me having my own radio show on the pirate station 'Radio Horizon'. He also completed a 3-year stint presenting a hospital radio soul music show from 1985-1988, and played sporadically on other radio stations throughout the 90’s and the 00’s. DJ Hughie had his first salsa dancing lesson during January 2001, and he has been a regular dancer on the salsa scene ever since. DJ Hughie’s first salsa music gig was during 2005, and he has since played salsa music in three continents – he really has not looked back since, and he remains one of the most in demand salsa DJs on the scene in the UK. Apart of salsa DJing and dancing, DJ Hughie also presents two weekly radio shows. His 2-hour long weekly ‘MIXED BAG’ radio show played live every SUNDAY NIGHT at 8pm (UK time) on radio station ‘JFSR.co.uk’ - The Home of Jazz, Funk and Soul’ https://jfsr.co.uk/ - on this show you will hear the very best mixture of quality salsa, Latin, soul, jazz & more (it is probably one of the most unique shows on the radio). This show has been presented weekly since May 2011. DJ Hughie also presents the 2-hour long weekly ‘LATIN SOUL EXPERIENCE’ radio show played live every WEDNESDAY NIGHT at 10pm (UK time) on ‘COLOURFUL.COM’ https://www.colourful.com/ - on this show you will hear the very best mixture of quality salsa, Latin, soul, plus more.
