creative projects
As part of the responsible tourism remit of the festival, Mboka festival, under SABLE publications is implementing two literary aspects:
Translation
A piece of work from our keynote writer will be translated into four Gambian languages, (Wolof, Mandika, Jola and Fula) in the written form and in Wolof and Mandinka in the aural form.
‘The Upright Revolution’ is a short story, written in Gikuyu by the three times nominated Noble Laureate for Literature, Kenyan writer, Ngugi wa Thiong’o. It was translated into four Gambian languages for the first Mboka Festival in 2017. Professor wa Thiong’o paid homage to the Gambia’s father of Literature, Dr Lenny Peters by visiting his grave site and the site of his clinic when he visited The Gambia between 13-19 January 2017.
The Upright Revolution is available to purchase (all four languages in one book) The money raised from the book goes to Roots Kindergarten in Sambuyang Village. Please contact SABLE Publications ([email protected]) for information.

Annual Review
Our first festival took place during the period of the ‘New Dawn’ - the inauguration of Gambia’s 3rd President, Adama Barrow, and so SABLE LitMag is now producing an annual review of work called ‘New Dawn’ that will include selected works produced by local and international writers invited to take part in the festival. This will also be translated into Wolof and Mandinka. A version will be available to to download and a print version will be available to purchase at the festival. This initiative was inspired by ‘language warrior’ Ngugi wa Thiong’o.
Listen to his interview with Ebrima Baldeh when he arrived at Banjul airport (media section) and read an interview him in the African Literature and Language section of our website.
New Dawn
Mboka – One Family, One Africa by Anni Domingo was written at a workshop at Tanji Museum facilitated by poet, Dorothea Smartt. It appears on the ‘African Postmark’ website along with 3 photoslideshows that she put together of her visit. This piece has also been included in the SABLE annual Review called New Dawn.
